However, if they are going to give as their reason for being an atheist that the Bible has contradictions or some other quality they don't like, then they probably should be more familiar with it than just having "read a few verses", right?

Jul 24, 2008 - it is illogical to retreat behind the argument that "they just haven't read the whole thing" when confronted with a claim of contradicting passages, because it doesn't address the claim of contradiction it only talks about the person making the claim. saying "oh well thats just from skeptics bible", is the same exact tactic of attacking the claim maker as opposed to attacking the actual claim.

Most atheists that I know are atheist for reasons that have nothing to do with the Bible. But if you are going to make the Bible your reason, you ought to know something about it.

Jul 23, 2008 - Good thinking as always EV. You were a little waek on the multiple author of the bible thing.Don't accept the consistancy in the first place. After all it's just an assretion and you can birng evidence against it. 2nd if the consistancy is true then this could be because of cultural uniformity or the simple fact the ultimately the books chosen for the bible were the ones that made some sort of sence when put together. There are probably other reasons as well.Cheers dude!
