(Please forgive any sound issues with this video, I'm still getting good at this).Hello everyone this is Sticky Sweater and today I'm going to do a retro review of the Super Nintendo classic, Mega Man X. Released in 1994, Mega Man X was the single largest step the series has ever taken. When X came out, the original series was already up to Mega Man 6 which had come out a few months earlier. If you've played those games, you know they were great, but things were definitely starting to get stale. They did their best to add new conventions like vehicles, the mega-buster, upside down levels and bizarre plot twists, but the world was moving on from the light hearted mega man of the NES age. There were four things which set the new 16 bit Mega Man apart from its 8 bit predecessors: the story, the controls, the upgrades and the graphics. Mega Man X takes place an indeterminate number of years after the original series where a new mega man tries to find his place in a chaotic war against humanity. The tone is a little darker with heavier themes than explored in previous titles. Nothing really cutting edge, but as a teenager growing up with video games, it was refreshing.Probably the most important advancement were the controls. It practically made this game a classic overnight. In the original mega man, when you went up against a robot master. You'd have to study their patterns very closely and usually use the weapon they were weak against to even have a chance. In Mega Man X, you had a lot more options. With dash jumps, wall kicks and slides you could own a robot boss using pure acrobatics. It felt great to have this kind of control over a character.Next we have the upgrades left by Dr. Light for mega man x to find. They increase your power and abilities in the game drastically. And of course the graphics were great for the time as well. The detail on the robot masters as well as X and Zero really gave this title a heart all its own. When I first started playing Mega Man X, I didn't like the idea of a new mega-man. I wanted to see him take on Dr. Wily again, but after playing this game for a few days, I was a complete convert. If you haven't picked this up, I highly suggest you try. It's a fairly common cartridge so you should be able to get it pretty cheap on eBay. You can also get it on the Mega Man X collection for the gamecube or Playstation 2, but nothing beats the controls of the original. Till next time, I'm sticky sweater.
