His descendants went on to stretch the empire, conquering all of modern-day China, as well as substantial portions of modern Russia, southern Asia, Eastern Europe and the Middle East. By 1279, the Mongol Empire covered over 33,000,000 km², 22% of the Earth's total land area. It held sway over a population of over 100 million people.
