Yellowstone Historical Documentary Short film. I always wanted to know how Yellowstone National Park became,who saw it first and what the park was like in the late 1800's. It was fun making this film,and next time we return to Yellowstone National Park, I will be even more amazed.Yellowstone History Discovery-Explorers Fur Traders Army Scout John Colter (c.1774 -- May 7, 1812 or November 22, 1813) was a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804−1806). Though party to one of the more famous expeditions in history, he is still best remembered for his explorations made after being honorably discharged in 1806. During the winter of 1807--1808, Colter became the first known person of European descent to enter the region now known as Yellowstone National Park, descend into Jackson Hole and see the Teton Mountain Range. Colter spent months alone in the wilderness, and is widely considered to be the first mountain man.Dr. Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden(September 7, 1829--December 22, 1887) was an American geologist noted for his pioneering surveying expeditions of the Rocky Mountains in the late 19th century.A noon meal in Ferdinand V. Hayden sits at far end of table in dark jacket.Yellowstone Lake is the largest body of water in Yellowstone National Park, The lake is 7,732 feet (2,376 m) above sea level and covers 136 square miles (352 km²) with 110 miles (177 km) of shoreline. While the average depth of the lake is 139 feet (42 m) its deepest spot is at least 390 feet (118 m). Yellowstone Lake is the largest freshwater lake above 7,000 feet (2,133 m) in North America.[1]In winter, ice nearly 3 feet (1 m) thick covers much of the lake, except where shallow water covers hot springs. The lake freezes over by early December and can remain frozen until late May or early June.The Yellowstone River is a tributary of the Missouri River, approximately 671 miles (1,080 km) long, in the western United States. Considered the principal tributary of the upper Missouri, the river and its tributaries drain a wide area stretching from the Rocky Mountains in the vicinity of the Yellowstone National Park across the mountains and high plains of southern Montana and northern Wyoming. It is the longest undammed river in the lower 48 states.The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is a large canyon of the Yellowstone River that is located in Yellowstone National Park in the United States. The canyon is up to 900 feet deep (275 m) and a half mile (0.8 km) in width.Thomas Moran (February 12, 1837 - August 25, 1926) from Bolton, England was an artist of the Hudson River School. Thomas Moran's vision of the Western landscape was critical to the creation of Yellowstone National Park.William Henry Jackson's career as photographer;in 1869 Jackson won a commission from the Union Pacific Railroad to document the scenery along their route for promotional purposes. The following year, he got a last-minute invitation to join the 1871 U.S. government survey (predecessor of USGS) of the Yellowstone River and Rocky Mountains led by Ferdinand Hayden. Painter Thomas Moran was also part of the expedition, and the two artists worked closely together to document the Yellowstone region. Hayden's surveys (accompanied usually by a small detachment of the U.S. Cavalry) were annual multidisciplinary expeditions meant to chart the largely-unexplored west, observe flora (plants), fauna (animals), and geological conditions (geology), and identify likely navigational routes, so Jackson was in a position to capture the first photographs of legendary landmarks of the West.The Washburn Expedition of 1870, explored the region of northwestern Wyoming that a couple years later became Yellowstone National Park. Led by Henry Washburn, Nathaniel P. Langford and under U.S. Army escort led by Lt. Gustavus C. Doane, the expedition followed the general course of the Folsom Expedition made the previous year.
