The diamondback terrapin was once hunted almost to extinction as a delicacy in American cuisine. It has also suffered from habitat destruction and degradation. The species lives along the eastern and Gulf coasts of the U.S. in brackish marshes, eating fiddler crabs, mollusks and sometimes small fish. It is listed as a "species of concern" in Georgia, and an endangered species in several other states. We moved this one out of the roadway.
