Here's my cover of Fade to Black by Metallica with both solos. There's certainly some limitations to doing it acoustically. For one, doing power chords on the heavy parts makes it sound like your chopping away at your guitar.There's a few mess-ups here and there, but overall it worksThe final solo starts to go to shit at the end because of: 1.) The action is set too high on my guitar, so whirling through those triplets is a pain 2.) My guitar only has 20 frets, so those extra high notes don't happen3.) I haven't mastered that last solo on an electric guitar yet, so the acoustic version is going to be even more rough around the edges. This is why I take the easy way out on some of the parts. Nov 19, 2008 - Sounds very nice for an acoustic version of a guitar, I myself have both acoustic and electric guitars, and playing electric songs on acoustic guitars gets very hard in solos because of the frets

Nov 19, 2008 - I agree. My acoustic guitar doesn't have anywhere near the amount of sustain as my electric. Plus the higher action and string tension make it harder to do a full step bend or rip through those triplets. Thankfully, the cutaway shape lets me at least get up to that 20th fret comfortably.

Nov 19, 2008 - I wouldn't doubt it. I was just playing from memory and without a metronome, so it's quite possible that it's a different tempo. I also tune my acoustic guitars a half-step down rather than standard tuning, which is another reason why my version sounds mellower.

Nov 19, 2008 - The original song on "Ride the Lightning" is in standard tuning. They didn't start the half-step down tuning on the albums until Load/Reload. When they play live, however, they do tune down a half-step, which could be what you're referring to. (This is also kind of awkward since they recorded "Death Magnetic" in standard tuning, but then they turn around and play the songs a half-step down live...Go figure.)

Nov 19, 2008 - Thanks for subscribing. I've been playing this song for a long time, so I initially learned it from a guitar magazine. A few years ago, I found a Guitar Pro tab for it and re-learned some sections from there. Some of the other bits and pieces are from watching Metallica perform the song live.
