It was already dark when we landed on the quay of Salonica, and we found upon enquiry that we could not obtain access to the interior of the city, the gates being always closed at sunset. We were directed, however, to a Turkish coffee-house, near the place of landing, where we found a large room, divided by railing into four elevated compartments, one of which was allotted to us. The others were occupied by various groupes of people, Turks, Greeks, and Albanians ; some sleeping, some smoking, others singing or in loud conversation.
