In January 1958,Callas was to open the Rome Opera House season in the opera Norma, with Italy's President and his wife in attendance.A Gala Evening.WIKIPEDIA quote:-"The day before the opening night, Callas alerted the management that she was not well and that they should have a standby ready. She was told 'NO ONE CAN DOUBLE CALLAS'.After being treated by doctors, she felt better on the day of performance and decided to go ahead with the opera. A SURVIVED BOOTLEG RECORDING of the first act reveals Callas sounding ill.Feeling that her voice was slipping away, she felt that she could not complete the performance, and consequently, she cancelled after the first act. She was accused of walking out on the President of Italy in a fit of temperament, and pandemonium broke out. Press coverage aggravated the situation."FRONT PAGE NEWS,the following day.Circa 50 BC during the Roman Occupation of Gaul. The Sacred Grove of the Druids.Clip 5.Adalgisa the Temple Virgin is alone on the stage, still torn between her sacred vows, and her would-be lover Pollione the Roman Proconsul.Pollione enters, and she tries to send him away.He reproaches her, gradually winning her over until she agrees to go with him to Rome!SOME GREAT BELLINI TUNES IN THIS CLIP.Tha audience seems to enjoy it!No one in the audience is aware of Callas's throat problems.Norma was one of Callas's greatest roles, and indeed ended her operatic career in 1965 at the Paris Opera.Poor quality sound, but the atmosphere of the evening is on tape forever.PHOTOS.1.CALLAS'S HAIRPIECE worn at her final Normas of 1965, at the Paris Opera. These were her last operatic appearances.DESIGNED,AND MADE BY CHRISTIAN DIOR.Reproduced, courtesy of 'The Callas Collection'.Normally she would wear a circlet of laurel(?)leaves.Maria Callas,soprano---Norma,High Priestess.Franco Corelli,tenor--Pollione,Roman Proconsul.Miriam Pirazzini,mezzo-soprano,Adalgisa,a Temple Virgin.
