The following three videos will be dedicated to Berthe Sylva, one of the "chanteuses réalistes" of the 1920's and 1930's. Sylva specialised in songs about the misery of everyday life, death (of mothers and children) and occasionally recorded lighter songs as well. Today she is best remembered for her songs "Les roses blanches" (The white roses), a classic tear jerker and "On n'a pas tous les jours vingt ans" (You're only 20 once). The first song is a French version of "Schöner Gigolo, armer Gigolo" (Just a gigolo). Another famed singer of this song was Damia, who recorded it in 1931, but with a completely different set of lyrics and much closer to the German version. Berthe Sylva possessed a powerful voice and like her contemporaries Damia, Fréhel, Mistinguett and others she always performed without a microphone. Unfortunately on her recordings she sometimes seems to shout into the microphone... This is reflected in this recording as well.... Nevertheless I hope you will enjoy her rendition of the famed tango.About the record :This record is quite old and in so-so condition, which is audible.Odeon - A238143a / Ki3642Enjoy!For the best Video/audio quality please select "Watch in high quality" as this is an MPEG-file.The video shows images of the great depression and the years of high inflation in Germany (early 1920's).This will start a cycle of music from the 20's and 30's.

Nov 23, 2008 - "Audible" - the record seems to be in a VERY good condition and I am most happy to have heard the speech-sound "s" at last ! So rare in present "home-transfers".Erwin, do NOT be afraid of the original and true sound of the old disc; it is its MOST important value and factor, apart from the music.By this presentation, I see that you are on a good way (according to my measures, of course).Merci.
