One thing you can do on a picnic. Design and manufacture a water wheel with picnic supplies. A little civil engineering on the local water supply is fun and voila, you're back 2,000 years. But what fun! Two models. The first was engineered as a model wheel; it lasted a little over a minute before the plate became waterlogged. The second was engineered to last. While the plates still waterlogged and warped, the twigs kept them together longer.
