Poetry Pals creates opportunities for partnership, expression, and friendship through poetry and art.Our community is rich in diversity, but often children do not get the chance to learn about one another's culture and history. Poetry Pals brings children from diverse backgrounds together to share their stories through poetry and art. Poet-educators teach children how to write poetry, and, using these new skills, the participants explore many topics: personal experiences, relationships, culture and identity. The children share their poetry and art, gain an appreciation for one another, and strengthen their own pride and self-esteem. They also learn to express themselves and listen with respect to others. For many children, writing poetry becomes a lifelong tool of expression.Poetry Pals is modeled after We the Poets, created by Dr. Cathleen Cohen in Philadelphia in 2001 and part of the Arts and Spirituality Center. We thank Dr. Cohen and her colleagues for their support and guidance in launching Poetry Pals in the Chicago area. Please check their website at www.artsandspirtuality.orgThe staff of Poetry Pals works with schools, after-school programs, clubs, faith-based youth groups to tailor programs. We assist in bringing diverse groups together. Through one- hour workshops, the children write about their feelings, life experiences, values, hopes and dreams. Art and music enhance the program.Many groups add a service-learning component to the project. For example, children can read their poems at a senior adult center, focus on the environment and particpate in a clean-up day, or mail poems to a hospital. Some groups establish poetry pen pals for ongoing contact.Poetry Pals operates under the umbrella of AI Partnership for the Arts, a not-for-profit organization under section 501 c-3 of the Internal Reveune Code.
