During John McCain's town hall meeting at the Denver Center for the Performing arts, a woman from a group called ADAPT (http://www.adapt.org/) says that they were in Washington DC in April and 40 people with disabilities were arrested. She said they came to McCain's office to ask him to support their legislation, the Community Choice Act that she says would end the institutional bias and allow people with disabilities to choose where they live and receive services. She asks him if he'll sign on to support the Community Choice Act. His pretty blunt answer is no and that he supported the Americans With Disabilities Act. From press reports a number of wheel chair bound participants left the meeting after McCain made his statement. I guess not everyone has a Sugar Momma like Cindy to take care of them and don't have to worry about ending up in a nursing home like John does.

Jul 16, 2008 - CAA would take money away from the Nursing Home industry, which takes significantly more money than it costs for home and community based services, to keep people in 8 by 10 rooms they have to share with a stranger.Furthermore, nobody should look at these folks with pity. They are well trained and educated advocates who are fighting for the American dream. ADAPT is aware that it will take money from others, they just want the money to follow the person, not the institution.

Jul 16, 2008 - I think that was the best answer I have ever heard McCain give. He was clear, concise, and actually knew enough to give valid reasons for not supporting her cause. I also like how he started out by simply saying, "I will not", instead of trying to tip toe around the question.

That's what the CCA is about. I'm 28, college-educated. I live with my parents b/c the only assistance the gov't offers is a nursing home.Just because McCain can walk and I can't, does that mean that he should be able to say where I can and cannot live? Because by opposing the Choice Act, that's what he's doing.

Aug 11, 2008 - The problem is that society does not view people with disabilities as people. They view them as objects. Neither the Republican or Democratic party is going to do much of anything to help people with disabilities and things are just getting worse. As long as so many people that could thrive in community based services and supported living are denied this right, they are still kept from living a full and productive life. The group homes have taken over where the institutions left off.

Than divorced his disabled wife and one MONTH later married the chic with the money, but collected his disability check anyway. When he tells you "That happened long ago" Well, his military service happened long before that. So much for the Republican's Family Values they shoved down our throats for years.

If St. Joseph does let residents at the Housing Commission order pay TV the channels will be controlled by the city and they won't be able to order the packages they want. It's like 'Little Cuba'.Call Frank Walsh at 269-983-5541 and tell him to lift the cable TV ban.
