Get a good look at a small Stripeneck Musk Turtle (Sternotherus minor peltifer). We found this 2 inch turtle in the Hiwassee River near the border of Tennessee and North Carolina. The stripeneck is a small turtle with a keeled carapace and a fleshy, hinged plastron. Their range is limited to Appalachian mountain streams and rivers in Virginia, Tennessee, and the Carolinas. They are uncommon, and are listed as a "species of concern" in all four states. They eat insects, mollusks, and annelids.
