Part IIHAWAII GOP REQUESTS STATE AND CITY ELECTION OFFICERS TO UPHOLD CANDIDATE FILING LAWSGOP Candidate to submit challenge to Office of ElectionsThe Hawaii Republican Party held a press conference today to urge the state and city election officers to uphold candidate filing laws and regulations. Hawaii GOP Chairman Willes K Lee, House Republican Leader Lynn Finnegan, and Republican candidate for Legislative District 24, Jerilyn Jeffreys, announced that they are investigating multiple different violations in the candidate filings of Democrat Chrystn Eads and Rep. Kirk Caldwell. "The Hawaii Republican Party expects the elections officers at the state and county to execute their fundamental job to review documents concerning Rep. Caldwell and Ms. Eads and take the correct action according to the law", said Chairman Willes K. Lee. He later continued by stating, "We are confident that Ms. Jeffryes is the only properly filed candidate for House District 24."Yesterday was the last day for city and state candidates to file nomination papers in order to be placed on Primary and General election ballots. By several accounts at the state Office of Elections, Democrat Chrytsn Eads attempted to pull and file nomination papers before the 4:30 PM deadline. A number of witnesses report that Ms. Eads did not file her candidate papers for House District 24 by the 4:30 PM deadline. According to the official Candidate Manual on the Office of Elections website, the deadline to file nominations papers was Tuesday, July 22, 2008, 4:30 PM. It also states that "State law prohibits exceptions or extension to the filing deadline." "In fairness to all candidates who followed the rules for filing papers, I urge the state and city election officers to do the right thing by disqualifying any candidate, or candidates, who did not meet the necessary filing requirements", said Ms. Jeffryes. She continued by stating: "If in fact election laws and regulations are not followed, I intend to submit in writing a challenge to the Office of Elections."The Hawaii Republican Party has also sent letters to the State Chief Elections Officer and Honolulu City Clerk requesting copies of the nomination filing papers for Ms. Eads and Mr. Caldwell.
